Making crosses usually is a straightforward process of taking pollen from one parent and placing them on another. But for many crops the results of these crossings can vary. There are multiple factors that influence the success rate of a crossing, but a major reason for low or no seed yield is low vitality of the pollen. The vitality of pollen can be influenced by many factors, including genetics, climate conditions, moment of collecting and time between collecting and pollination.
Pollen vitality can easily and accurately be measured using flow cytometry. Using flow cytometry over 10.000 pollen can be measured individually in just one minute. With this tool, a breeder can gain valuable information about the right moment to make a crossing and the optimal storage conditions of the pollen.
Thoughout the years we used flow cytometry in various projects for our Plant Breeder customers. Pollen Vitality determination is a frequently used application of flow cytometry, giving us the opportunity to add value as a Breeding Support Laboratory. Because of the degenerative nature of most pollen, we decided to sell flow cytometers configured specifically for pollen vitality analysis.
For Microspore viablity a similar configuration and setup can be used.
Other applications with our flow cytometers are the determination of ploidy level, and detection of aneuploids in batched samples.

Collect the pollen & mix them with the provided buffer,
Add the provided reagent, and wait ~15 minutes,
Insert the tube in the machine and directly see the results.
